I've used my Apple Watch to track my walk for the first time and it's lived up to everything I wanted out an activity tracker.
Using the WORKOUT app built into the Apple Watch I set off for my usual 3 mile walk that I try to do daily. In the past I've just tracked distance using the HEALTH app on my iPhone but given that I use Bluetooth headphones my phone was always tucked away in my jacket pocket and not easily accessible all of the time. When the Apple Watch was announced I was always more interested in this tracking capability than anything else so it's been great to take mine out for walk today.
I fired up the WORKOUT app told it I was going on an OUTDOOR WALK then you have options, you can select target time/mileage/calories but I left it open and then pressed start. Once an animation plays you are good to go.
The app is at the forefront of your watch and whenever I raised my wrist I could see the current time, time since the workout started and then the bottom pane was showing either heart rate, current distance and calories. I left mine at current distance as I wanted to make sure I was on target to do 3 miles, next time I will select the mileage option on workout set up.
At each mile I had a tap and animation change on the watch, a nice way to see progress and whilst walking I replied to a message and declined a phone call.
I spent just over an hour out (and used around 15% of the battery) and when I ended my activity (force touch to bring up options) it gave me a nice summary of my workout including avg heart rate and distance. It then gave me the option to save my workout, which I could see when I went back into the app.
Overall I'm impressed with the WORKOUT app and the way the watch allowed me to track my activity whilst allowing me to control my podcasts (via Overcast) and screen messages and calls I had whilst I was walking. I'm impressed and even better it justifies my purchase even more as an enabler to allowing me to better track my activities.
It's lived up to my expectations for what I wanted to from a fitness tracker so far.
