Google have set the bar now Apple need to follow on free photo storage.
In watching the latest Google keynote it struck me how well thought out their products seemed to be - especially when storing all of your precious photos and videos.
This is a big attack on Apple, even with it’s increased 32GB base model I constantly have friends/family asking me what they can do with their Photo library and on more than one occasion I’ve told them to use Google Photos. This plays straight into one of the main features of it’s new Pixel range of phones (more on this is a separate post) and one that makes sense.
I have felt strongly for a while that the 5GB that Apple offers us isn’t enough - they should at least give you the amount that your phone you purchased for a lot of money came with to enable you to back up your stuff.
My view is that
- Free storage should ebe qual to the amount of space that your iPhone can hold when you purchased it I.e. 128Gb iPhone 7 gives you 128GB iCloud storage - this can cover your iCloud back up
- Photo/video storage should be split off from iCloud and follow the Google model I.e. unlimited storage for all of your photos and videos at full resolution
I know this is a lot of storage but come on Apple have enough money in the bank to pay for or build extra server space. This would be such a good feature to tout to potential customers and I feel would help the overall user experience.
The answer that Apple will give on all of this at the moment is to enable iCloud Photo Library. This isn't sufficient given that 5GB isn't going to be enough to store most users photo library. It's a poor show in today's landscape to only offer a dollar amount to your photos when Google is doing it for free.
I really hope that this free photo storage sell from Google will force the hand of Apple to offer something similar for us in their eco-system.
