I'm starting to get through iOS 10 now I've been using it for a few days and wanted to share my thoughts on the new Apple Music app.
First off, even in the day or so I've been using it I am impressed with the general look and feel of the new app. We now have a much cleaner starting screen, large fonts and exactly the lists I would want to see on starting the app:
- Downloaded Music
Underneath this we have a nice scrolling album artwork view of recently added music, which is great.
Gone is the forced 'For You' first tab and we have them in this order
- Library (yes!!)
- For you
I'm happy with this layout, it gives me quick access to everything I need.
It shows me what is downloaded to device in one view
Within the Library tab there is a new Downloaded Music page that shows you a view (artist/album/etc...) of everything that is local to the device. This is probably my favourite new feature of Apple Music and especially now I have a capped allowance on my 4G data is going to come in very handy when I'm out and about.
I'm liking the revised For You tab, it's showing me
- Recently Played (yes!!)
- Daily playlists
- Heavy rotation (you can see what you listen to most)
- Artist playlists (artist specific or chosen by an artist)
- New releases (based on my listening habits)
Greeted with featured curated playlists then
- New music
- Curated playlists
- Top charts
Pretty much the same as iOS 9
- Beats 1 show index
- Stations (charting now etc...)
The last tab, pretty much self explanatory and also now shows Recent Searches.
In the refreshed TODAY screen we now have a Music widget, this shows recently played music and playlists. It makes sense to have this in there but I'd like a more dynamic widget that showed me the current music playing and controls.
Swiping up from the bottom still gives us Control Center but this time swiping to the right gives us the music controls.
We now have an Optimise Storage option to let the device automatically manage your music collection based on how much space is left on your device.
In my testing it's been rock solid under iOS 10, it's only a few days so will report back on this one over time.
It's a much more simplified view of your music and makes a lot more sense for new users now - in a nutshell, more intuitive.
Great job Apple.
