I've been using the new 10.5" iPad Pro for a couple of days and wanted to share my experience so far.
I've owned every size of the iPad (I still love the MINI BTW, please Apple don't drop it!) and feel that with the 10.5" I have personally found my sweet spot.
Here's my setup:
- 10.5" iPad Pro 256GB in space grey
- Smart Keyboard cover
- Apple Pencil
Here's what apps I've used so far
- Apple Notes
- Apple Music
- Squarespace Blog
I've used it for:
- Listening to music (makes a great desktop music player)
- Making notes at work using Noteability, with Apple Pencil
- Making personal notes using Apple Notes, with Apple Pencil
- Watching a lot of video using YouTube
- Writing articles like this
As always the unboxing experience is great and first impressions on picking up the new iPad Pro was that I didn't notice a difference to my 9,7". I had to hold one in each hand, it isn't much - nothing to stop you buying one if you still want portability.
First thing I noticed on setting up was the responsiveness of the screen. Everything I did felt quicker than on any iPad I had used before, I spent a little while just flicking back and forth pages on the home screen (yes, I need to get out more!).
In use it feels slick, everything from navigating through your emails to app switching. I have to think that the new refresh rate increase makes up most of this but given the new processor on top then it's a beast.
I've tried having loads of Safari tabs open, lots of apps and lots of tracks in GarageBand and I can't peg it, I've experienced zero lag so far.
Is the screen increase worth it over the 9.7"?
You wouldn't think that the slight increase up to 10.5" would make a big difference but the screen increase with the smaller bezels makes it feel roomier than the 9.7".
Running apps side by side feels great and not squashed at all (I've used the 12.9" so expecting it to feel a little small) and I've found myself putting my 12" MacBook back in the drawer and going all in on iOS again.
The new Smart Keyboard cover
I've been a user of the 12.9" Smart Cover and absolutely loved it, doesn't add much bulk and feels comfortable to type on (for me). Well my experience of the 10.5" version is more of the same and with the extra width over the 9.7" means I can touch type, I'm flying on it.
In fact I prefer the Smart Keyboard cover to the keyboard I have on my 12" MacBook!
I'm all in on iOS
Here we go again, I'm putting my MacBook aside again and trying to go iOS only. At this point I actually prefer iOS over macOS and would love to just use an iPad for all my day to day computing.
With the incoming iOS 11 update (and already playing around a little with the beta) I'm confident that the iPad is going to become my go to device for my computing needs.
So you can probably tell I love the 10.5" iPad experience so far, it's the perfect combination for both portability and power that I need.
I'll continue to write about my experiences on iOS and how I work day to day.
Let me know if you are trying to go iOS only and please share any tips you find along the way.
